Choosing somewhere to stay during your visit
One of the first decisions families need to make when planning an Orlando Florida visit is where to stay.
The best choice often depends on the type of visit you want. If you are only planning to visit Disney parks or Universal parks, a Disney or Universal resort hotel can be a great choice because you are close to the action. If your plans include both Disney and Universal, or somewhere a little further afield such as Busch Gardens, a villa in a convenient location with a hire car may make more sense.
Many families also choose off-site hotels, including those around International Drive. Some hotels offer complimentary shuttles to selected parks, which can help guests get around more easily.
Here are some of the benefits of each type of accommodation.
Off-site hotel
- Often more cost-effective if you are on a tight budget
- Complimentary shuttles to theme parks at some hotel locations
- Close to a range of off-site dining locations
Resort hotel
- Closer to the action
- Early theme park entry
- Ability to purchase or use the Disney Dining Plan if staying on Disney property
- Variety of Quick Service and Table Service dining locations on site
- Complimentary transport to parks, water parks, shopping areas, and entertainment areas
- Swimming pools
- In-resort activities such as movie nights, fire pits, marshmallows, s'mores, and crafts
Villa
- Full property for the family to enjoy in private
- Often has its own pool
- Separate bedrooms for children
- Kitchen facilities for self-catering options
- Separate or multiple bathrooms
- Laundry facilities
- Additional facilities such as a games room or sports equipment in some villas
There is no single right or wrong answer. The best choice is the one that suits your family, your budget, and the type of Orlando Florida visit you want to have.
